How to Clean Vents in a Calgary Home — A Practical Guide

Air vents are one of the most neglected surfaces in Calgary homes, and one of the most impactful when it comes to indoor air quality. After a 5–6 month heating season, Calgary vent covers accumulate significant dust, pet dander, and particulate matter that gets redistributed into your living spaces every time the furnace runs.

1. **Vacuum first:** Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to remove loose dust from the vent cover surface and between the slats. Do this before any wet cleaning — vacuuming wet dust creates a sticky paste that's harder to remove.

2. **Wipe with damp cloth:** Dampen a microfiber cloth with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. Wipe each slat individually. For metal vents, rinse and dry — soap residue attracts more dust.

3. **For very dusty vents:** Remove the vent cover (typically 2–4 screws) and wash in warm soapy water in a sink or bathtub. Allow to fully dry before reinstalling — moisture in ducts promotes mold growth.

**Inside the Duct Opening (When Vent Cover Is Removed)**

With the vent cover off, you can clean the first 6–12 inches of the duct with a vacuum and a long brush attachment. This removes the accumulated dust ring that forms where the duct meets the vent opening.

Do not insert anything further into the duct than you can see. Beyond the first section, ducts branch and turn — without proper equipment, you risk dislodging debris into areas you cannot access.

**Return Air Vent (Furnace Filter Area)**

The largest vent in the home — usually in a hallway ceiling or main floor wall — is the return air intake. This is where most dust accumulates.

- Remove the cover and vacuum thoroughly. - Replace your furnace filter at the same time.
